EIU welcomes top high school scholars for 2025 ACES State Competition

Apr-14-2025

(Charleston, IL) – Beginning today, Eastern Illinois University will welcome more than 1,200 of the State’s brightest high school minds as the University hosts the 2025 Academic Challenge for Engineering and Science (ACES) State Competition on its Charleston campus. This year’s event, running from April 14–17, highlights the exceptional academic talents of Â鶹´«Ã½ from nearly 170 Illinois high schools.

EIU has organized the ACES competition since 2019, continuing a tradition once known as the WYSE Outreach Program from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The event is now managed by EIU’s School of Extended Learning, in collaboration with partner institutions across Illinois and Missouri. Over the course of the academic year, nearly 450 high schools have competed at the regional and sectional levels, both in-person and online, leading to this culminating State competition.

Participants compete in one of four divisions—based on school size—and the competition schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, April 14: Division 300 – 407 Â鶹´«Ã½, 61 coaches from 60 high schools
  • Tuesday, April 15: Division 700 – 375 Â鶹´«Ã½, 50 coaches from 51 high schools
  • Wednesday, April 16: Division 1500 – 327 Â鶹´«Ã½, 37 coaches from 37 high schools
  • Thursday, April 17: Division Unlimited – 159 Â鶹´«Ã½, 21 coaches from 21 high schools

All events take place in the Grand and University Ballrooms of the MLK Jr. University Union at Eastern Illinois University, 600 Lincoln Avenue, Charleston.

During the competition, Â鶹´«Ã½ will choose two exams from subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering Graphics, English, Math, and Physics. Top-performing Â鶹´«Ã½ placing first through fifth in each subject will earn individual medals, while schools achieving top scores will be awarded team trophies.

“Eastern is honored to celebrate these remarkable young scholars and their academic achievements,” said Josh Norman, Vice President for Enrollment Management at EIU. “The ACES competition brings some of Illinois' most promising future engineers, scientists, and thinkers to our campus, and we hope many will consider EIU as their first-choice University.”

Eastern Illinois University encourages prospective Â鶹´«Ã½, families, and educators to visit eiu.edu or contact EIU Admissions to learn more about the University’s dynamic academic programs, welcoming campus environment, and commitment to student success.

EIU prepares Â鶹´«Ã½ to accomplish their life goals through a combination of quality academics, personal relationships, and both on-campus and online learning opportunities.
