No other art form can duplicate the kind of perception which results from expressing one's self through musical performance. The person who performs in a musical organization is paving the way for future musical enjoyment, whether listening or performing. A member of the Eastern Illinois University Marching Band enjoys involvement in a campus organization that provides immediate identity and purpose. The Panther Marching Band encourages and promotes academic excellence with a rehearsal and performance schedule that is compatible with the student's academic responsibilities. Band members are involved in performances, athletic events, trips, social programs, and are an essential ingredient of school spirit and campus life at EIU. Without music, however, there would be no concert bands, jazz bands, marching bands or pep bands. MUSIC will be the most important ingredient of the Eastern Illinois University Band Program. Although participation in this organization provides such non-musical benefits as learning to work together, building a sense of responsibility, and feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride in doing something well, the primary purpose of the band program is making MUSIC together. The following pages contain guidelines for band members that have been formulated for the purpose of maintaining an organization in which each member, the entire university, and the community may take pride. With great excitement and anticipation, we welcome you to the Eastern Illinois University Marching Band! EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND PRIDE. PASSION. PERFORMANCE. Mission Statement The Athletic Bands at Eastern Illinois University fulfill an educational and inspirational role in the life of the university. These ensembles instill a sense of pride and tradition through music and spirit. For Eastern Illinois University 鶹ý, we seek to: 1. Provide 鶹ý with opportunities to perform proficiently, artistically, and with pride in front of thousands of spectators. 2. Offer ensembles with high performance standards that encourage 鶹ý to learn the value of teamwork, dedication to task, and healthy work habits. 3. Provide a creative outlet for all 鶹ý and an opportunity to continue performing and interacting with other performers. 4. Furnish a social organization that allows 鶹ý to become a part of a new circle of friends with whom they have something in common. 5. Give prospective music teachers insight into the various organizational details and tasks necessary for successful athletic bands. 6. Provide 鶹ý with the opportunity to grow as leaders through positions of section leader, drum major, senior assistant, area captain. 7. Give all 鶹ý the opportunity to interact and work together with other 鶹ý from various academic pursuits, races, cultures, and backgrounds. For alumni, supporters, and employees of EIU, we strive to: 1. Add color and excitement to many important university events such as Homecoming, Freshman Orientation, and football and basketball games. 2. Represent the University, the Department of Music, and the community at several widely attended and publicized off campus events each year. 3. Maintain and add to the cherished traditions of Eastern Illinois University through high quality performances of the Eastern State March, the Alma Mater, and other Panther traditions. For Panther athletes and fans at football and basketball games, we work to: 1. Provide inspiration and excitement that creates the greatest home court/field advantage possible, while staying within the rules and the realm of good taste. 2. Demonstrate enthusiasm for the Panther teams that is consistent, visible, audible, and reflects well on the university. 3. Become involved in the game by leading cheers and providing timely music. ( 4. Create an exciting and enjoyable atmosphere in which to view a university athletic event, including pre-game, halftime, and post-game entertainment, as well as playing during the game. ( 5. Show leadership during the game by working to get the rest of the audience involved in a positive way. A Few Expectations . . . Explanation of Standards 1. DFAC 1550 and Tarble Field are BUSY places . . . . NO TIME FOR DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS . . . too much to learn, too much to accomplish, and a lot of fun awaiting us through music and learning. 2. You are the most important person on Tarble Field and in DFAC 1550, but YOU must be responsible for your own actions. 3. This organization is different from all others on this campus. It is an HONOR to be in this group, a special PRIVILEGE. Most of the 鶹ý outside of this group cannot handle the "self-discipline" needed to succeed here. YOU ARE SPECIAL because you CAN. 4. It is more important how you ACT than how you play. The two work together. Generally, the best players are those who are most attentive. 5. THINK TOGETHERNESS: we learn to work together and to depend on each other. 6. You are expected to listen intently to learn all you can and be quiet so others can learn. This requires patience and understanding. 7. As long as you do the best you can - give 100% - that is enough. 8. Bring all your equipment EVERY DAY . . . instrument, music, lyre, drill charts, pencil, color guard equipment, etc. 9. YOU GET TO PRACTICE EVERY DAY . . . make the time before classes, during breaks in your schedule, or after classes every day. 10. School Property: take care of the instruments, equipment and facilities that we have. We are fortunate to have the things we do. 11. CARE OF INSTRUMENT: NO ONE SHOULD TOUCH YOUR INSTRUMENT AT ANYTIME. CARRY your instrument with you . . . never leave it in a chair or on the field by itself. 12. IF YOU DON'T PLAY IT, THEN DON'T TOUCH IT. 13. Label all your equipment with name, address, telephone number. 14. Always arrive at least 5 minutes early to rehearsals, etc. If Dr. Druffel says 6:30, he means 6:20. (A good idea to use this in other areas). 15. Through music and your instrument we are hoping to teach you to develop self-confidence, enthusiasm for life, respect for yourself, each other, and the university. 16. Nothing was ever accomplished without enthusiasm. MARCHING BAND Rehearsal Procedures 1. All rehearsals are required. Rehearsals are as follows: Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons at 4:00-5:50 PM. Saturday rehearsal times vary based on kickoff time (typically 9AM) Never assume a rehearsal is canceled because of inclement weather 2. Prior to rehearsal every student will take everything that is needed, including charts, pencil, music, lyre, etc. Playing of instruments to and from the rehearsal field is not allowed. 3. Section rehearsals are vital for working out details essential to a fine performance. A portion of outdoor rehearsals may be devoted to sectional warm-up and rehearsal led by section leaders. Strict attention to section leaders is expected. When the director or drum major takes charge of the rehearsal, all other activity must stop and attention should be focused on instructions. 4. The podium is a platform in more than just the literal sense of the word, for it is the only place in the rehearsal room or on the rehearsal field from which gestures and suggestions can mold a group of individuals into an organization. Whenever any of the directors, drum majors, or any other person takes the podium, the group will give him/her complete attention. This means total silence and quickness to respond to instructions. 5. Section leaders are responsible for asking the directors about anything in the music or drill charts that is unclear. Anyone who puts his/her mind to it can solve almost any problem with EYES and EARS. 6. A rehearsal ends WHEN the director ends it. Every student must put away his/her own instrument before leaving the rehearsal room or field. Any area we use is to be left as clean or cleaner than it was before we used it. 7. Never leave instruments or uniforms unattended. 8. Your full cooperation with directors, drum majors, and section leaders is expected. Alternate System With time so precious to the marching band, it is imperative that all band members be on time for all rehearsals. If a member continually misses practices without any prior excuse given to the director, that member shall either be placed as an alternate or be given a limited role that does not hinder the bands performance. The discretion lies with the director. Each performance of the band is important enough that each member must be in attendance at every rehearsal. One member cannot allow the other members to carry him/her; each must do his/her own part. Performance Procedures 1. All performances are required. Information regarding performance dates, times, and locations will be announced in rehearsals and posted on bulletin boards and social media. Never assume a performance is canceled because of inclement weather. 2. Prior to a performance every student will take everything that is needed for that performance including instrument, uniform, music, etc. Playing of instruments, including warm-up, will only take place in designated areas at designated times. 3. Uniforms are to be worn in their entirety with coats buttoned and zipped as necessary. Band t-shirts are to be worn underneath the coat at all performances where the band is to be in full uniform. 4. During games, only band members will sit in the stands designated as band seats. Band members must sit with their sections. 5. No one is to leave the stands during the game without the express permission of the director or one of the drum majors. 6. Cheering at games as an organization is vital to generating spirit and enthusiasm of the student body, alumni, and fans. Participate loudly and enthusiastically while paying attention to what is happening on the field. 7. Students are not excused from performances until the organization is dismissed by the directors or by the drum majors. Uniforms Each student will be issued the following: 1. Shako $ 60 2. Shako Box $ 5 3. Plume $ 20 4. Coat $150 5. Pants $ 90 6. Garment Bag $ 5 Total $330 Because the uniforms must last several years, each student is responsible for the care of his/her uniform. Each uniform part is numbered and issued to the student. Any uniform part that is not returned at the conclusion of the marching season will be the financial responsibility of the student to whom the uniform was issued. Do not trade uniform parts, and do not make alterations to the uniforms. Any problems with uniform fitting should be brought to the attention of the director. Uniform pant lengths should be measured 3 1/2" off the floor with band shoes and suspenders on. Adjustments in the pant length should be made by adjusting the suspender clips. Gloves that are to be worn with the full uniform at all performances. Gloves are purchased at band camp. Once the uniform is issued to the student, the care of the uniform is the student's responsibility. Any uniform part damaged beyond usual wear will be charged to the student. Any uniform part that is not returned following a performance is the responsibility of the student to whom it was issued. The replacement fees listed above will be applied. Grades will be held until all items are returned or until replacement fees are paid. When the shako is on, hair is to be worn off the uniform collar and behind the ears. Students may choose to get hair cut to a manageable length or may use an inconspicuous device to hold hair in place during performance. Uniform Care The uniform is to be dry-cleaned only, never washed. Allow the uniform to air out before closing it in a garment bag. If caught in the rain, a uniform must be allowed to dry at normal room temperature. Hang the uniform on a well-shaped hanger and allow it to hang freely without crowding to prevent wrinkles. Always hang the pants by aligning the creases before placing them on the hanger. Never force a zipper if it jams. If necessary, uniform pants may be pressed by placing a damp towel over them and then ironing the towel. Gloves and uniform collar liners may be washed. The shako may be wiped off with warm, soapy water and then dried with a towel. Take pride in your uniform and your band by taking care of your uniform. Wear it with PRIDE! GENERAL INFORMATION Grading A member of the Eastern Illinois University Marching Band must do more than play an instrument. Each member of the Panther Marching Band must ASSUME AND ACCEPT THE RESPONSIBILITIES that such membership demands. A student's ability to meet the obligations of the organization is reflected in his/her grade for this class. The academic grade is the overall mark given in relation to the student's ability to meet the following requirements: 1. Preparation. The music to be performed must be prepared thoroughly and individually by each member. The purpose of the rehearsal is to put music together with attention to precision, execution, and style, into a total musical and performance concept. Individual preparation will be observed by the director, instructors, graduate assistants and section leaders in rehearsals and performances. 2. Equipment. The following materials and equipment must be present at each rehearsal and performance as needed: a. Instrument in perfect playing condition. b. Music c. Necessary accessories such as lyres, flip folder, reeds, etc. d. Pencil e. Proper uniform for performances 3. Procedures. All stated rehearsal and performance procedures must be followed. 4. Attendance/Participation. A. Daily rehearsal participation is vital to the growth and the success of both the organization and the individual. Therefore, it is essential that each student be on time and present at every rehearsal. Clearing any absences with the director is the student's responsibility. Absences due to illness will be considered excused ONLY if it is reported via email and or personal conversation with the director prior to the start of rehearsal on the day of the absence. Any absence reported after the date and time of the absence will be considered unexcused. Absences due to illness will require a doctors note to be considered excused. An unexcused absence from rehearsal will result in the final grade being lowered by one letter grade. In addition, a poor participation attitude may cause a student's membership to be terminated. B. Performance participation is mandatory, for every member is vital to the success of the organization and each performance is equivalent to a test that cannot be made up. Each member must take the responsibility to obtain information regarding performances. Performance dates and times will be announced at rehearsals and posted on bulletin boards and social media well in advance. A student with an UNEXCUSED absence from a performance will receive a failing grade in the course. Because participation in the Panther Marching Band is a cooperative group activity, successful rehearsals and performances necessitate the maintenance of order in the rehearsal room, on the practice field, in performance, and positive support of EIU Athletics. Therefore, each student's attitude and deportment constitute an inclusive part of his/her academic grade. University Instruments Eastern Illinois University owns a limited number of musical instruments. All 鶹ý are advised to use their own instruments when possible. Large instruments, such as mellophones, baritones, sousaphones, and percussion, are available for all 鶹ý who don't normally own these instruments. Any student who checks out a university instrument is responsible for its care, safety and repair as if it were his/her own instrument. The student is financially responsible for any loss or damage to a school instrument beyond normal use. Instrument Repair A limited number of tools and equipment are available for minor repairs. Minor repairs on instruments can be performed by the directors. However, it is recommended that the student's instrument receive the professional treatment of a repair specialist. The directors can assist you in getting your instrument to a reputable music dealer for specialized repair. Band Staff The band staff is a group of 鶹ý selected to assist the director and be involved in the student administration of band activities. Students selected to the band staff are leaders in that they are capable and worthy of leading others. The primary function of the band staff is to provide student leadership, the foundation of the band's inner discipline. The band staff works closely with the director in helping determine schedules and policies. The band staff includes senior assistants, band managers, librarians, equipment crew, publicity staff, uniform crew and a social committee. Media Awareness Cell phones are to be turned off and not to be used during rehearsals or performances. The EIU email system will be the primary means of communication between the directors and 鶹ý. Any communication between the director and the student/s is considered private information for the student or the entire band and should not be forwarded to any person or media, including local newspapers, message boards, or other social media. Media Interviews: 鶹ý will NOT grant interviews with news media (print, television, or internet) without permission form the directors. Please contact the directors regarding any interview request, and include publication, topic, and reporter. Message Boards: DO NOT comment on ANY message board on the topic of University Athletic Bands or University Athletics, even if the comment would be positive or a defensive comment. If commenting on a non-band subject, never identify yourself as a member of the PMB. DO NOT post or allow others to post images or descriptions of themselves participating in any illegal or illicit behavior. Hazing Hazing is any humiliating or dangerous activity often imposed on another student. Dont even think about making another student do anything they dont want to do.
