Master of arts in teaching elementary education program

Earn a master's degree - fully online - in just one year

Starting in the summer of 2025, the Department of Teaching, Learning and Foundations at EIU is offering a master’s degree program in Elementary Education that is fully online and is designed for aspiring educators as well as career changers who want to make a difference in children’s lives.

Teaching is a rewarding career, and the benefits of this program will help you earn your degree and obtain licensure to teach in grades 1-6 in Illinois. We are preparing the next generation of teachers, and we want you to be part of this exciting program.

Summer 2025 

First 4 Weeks

  • SPE 5002 - Characteristics and Legal Iusses in Special Education (3 credits)
  • ELE 5003 - Child and Community (3 credits)

Second 4 Weeks

  • EDF 5510 - Theory to Practice: Social Foundations (3 credits)
  • ELE 5004 - Elementary Pedagogy (3 credits)

Fall 2025 

First 8 Weeks

  • ELE 5005 - Developmental and Diagnostic Reading (3 credits)

Second 8 Weeks

  • EDF 5520 - High Quality Instruction (3 credits)

All 16 Weeks

  • STG 5008 - Residency I in Elementary Education (6 credits)

Spring 2026 

First 8 Weeks

  • ELE 5006 - Curriculum in the Content Areas (3 credits)

Second 8 Weeks

  • ELE 5007 - Assessment in the Content Areas (3 credits)

All 16 Weeks

  • STG 5009 - Residency II in Elementary Education (6 credits)
